Who is responsible

The controller for Geocruncher is [Name and contact address to be filled in]. Contact them with questions about your data.

Playing without an account

Playing needs no account, and we keep no personal data about players. Your scores, your streak and your language are stored only in your own browser.

If you create an account

We store your alias, email address and password (as a hash, never in plain text), when the account was created and its role. If you sign in with Google, we get your name and email from Google, and the sign-in tokens Google gives us, which we store encrypted.

Sign-ins

For each sign-in we store when it was made and expires (after 7 days), your IP address and browser. This keeps you signed in and helps with security; you can see and sign out other devices on your account page.

Your quizzes

Quizzes and groups you make are stored with your account as owner. Shared quizzes can be played by anyone with the link, and do not show who made them.

Your streak

If you are signed in, your streak (how many right answers in a row you have and your record, and which places the running streak has counted) is stored with your account, so it follows you between devices. Only you see it. Deleting your account removes it.

Top lists

If you save a score while signed in on a quiz whose top list is for everyone, we store your best score per quiz and mode (percentage, time, tries and when) with your account and show it under your alias to everyone who plays the quiz. On your account page you can remove your scores from the top lists, and deleting your account removes them.

Your bests

If you are signed in, your best score per quiz and mode (percentage, time, tries and when) is stored with your account, so it follows you between devices. Only you see it, and on signing in it is also copied to the browser you use. Deleting your account removes it.

Cookies

We use only necessary cookies: one for signing in while you are signed in, and one (cc_cookie) that remembers your answer to the cookie notice. Settings, scores and language are stored in your browser (localStorage), not with us. We use no tracking, analytics or advertising. You can open the cookie settings at any time at the bottom of the page or under Account.

Favorites

If you are signed in, the quizzes and groups you put in Favorites, and when, are stored with your account. Only you see the list. Deleting your account removes it.

Play statistics

When a round ends we count it in the quiz’s statistics: how many rounds and players the quiz has per day, the average score and time, and how often each place is missed. Only totals are stored, never who played. Your browser remembers which quizzes it has played, so you count as a player only once per quiz. The creator sees the statistics of their quizzes.

Reports and limits

If you report a quiz, the reason and your comment are stored, but nothing about you. To stop abuse we count requests per IP address; the address is stored only as a hash, for at most ten minutes.

Where data lives

The database is with Neon in London and the app runs on Vercel in London. The UK has an EU adequacy decision. Vercel keeps technical request logs (including IP address) for a short time. Your browser fetches map tiles directly from Esri, which sees your IP address as with any web visit. Place search in the editor goes through us to OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and its API) and Wikidata, which receive nothing about you.

Cookies

We only use a cookie that keeps you signed in. It is needed for the service to work, so we do not ask for consent for it. No tracking, no ads.

Your rights

On your account page you can download everything we store about you, change your alias, remove your scores from the top lists and delete your account. Deleting it removes it at once, with your quizzes, groups, scores and streak. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
